Like – OMG.

I have finally raised myself to a slightly higher level of Geekdom:
I successfully installed Apache Server, PHP5 and MySQL on my WindowsXP Pro machine.
And they all work together.
And I installed WordPress.
I can now test WP layouts and other stuff without having to have a server & FTP connection for upload!!

Yay me 🙂

Seriously though, I’m really proud of myself for being able to decipher the instructions and make all this stuff talk. LOL
This will make my webby life soooo much easier!

In other news, I got to see the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile today. Fun American nostalgia. *giggle*

i’m still alive.. just been busy with many many projects. still haven’t found just the right image for a new layout here.
i have 4 unfinished scarves in my knitting bag, a couple of unfinished websites in my queue, a volunteer job i’m working on bit by bit, and slowly cleaning my poor apartment. heh.
plus MediaShelf 2.0 is out, so i decided instead of upgrading i’d just do a fresh install. that gives me a chance to put scans/pictures of everything up, which i didn’t do before. why? because i’m a dork, and because it would help if my stuff were ever stolen or damaged. insurance purposes. as of tonight, i’m up to Stone Temple Pilots in the CDs. after the cds, i will do the 7″ singles, then 10″, then the LPs and 12″ singles. ohh this will take forever.
one design note for next layout: it will all be in sentence case. *gasp*! yes, i’m going to follow a simple english principle. lol.

busy bee!

except not on -this- site. 😛

have a new design client, a brand new bike shop that’s already doing quite well! i really want one of the bikes he’s selling too.. can’t afford it though. maybe some day. :}
so that’s coming along nicely – hopefully he’ll get some text together for the main sections tomorrow.

which reminds me, i really need to update my portfolio site. maybe even get a domain for it. the site still has my old ‘business name’ on it, which i’ve scrapped because it was confusing to customers. lol. plus it doesn’t really show off my skills – it’s quite plain. *shrug*

must get off computer now – my head is threatening migraine. :/

updates and opinions on a hot sunday (not fudge)

joy, i’ve just finished up a bunch of site maintenance, here and at my duranduran site. here i upgraded wordpress to the latest version, cleaned out some dead links (only 2 of the webrings were still around!), and checked things over.
need to take a pic of myself wearing the scarf i finished the other night, as i posted the pattern for it on the varied page. it’s incredibly simple, but looks better than just plain knit for the kind of yarn i used. 🙂

i’ve been playing a lot of sims2 lately, which is silly, but oh well. i’m easily amused. one of my favourite things is building & furnishing the houses. especially if i’m trying to do so from the floorplans in a street of dreams book. mmm $4m+ homes.
and i’m anxiously awaiting the ‘pets’ expansion pack – i still only have ‘night life’ cos i keep spending my play money on other things. and my favourite expansion for sims1 was the pets. 😀

hmm, not really much else to blab about.
i thought about posting my opinion on the whole dreamhost outage thing on friday, but i didn’t. short version: they’re back up, i don’t have any business to lose over the outages, i didn’t even get put on the troubles list at, and everything appears to be there, so it’s fine with me. i can see where the business owners and people of that type came from by saying they’re going to find hosting elsewhere, but i also say good riddance, because they shouldn’t be relying on $15/month hosting for something THAT important. but, on the other hand, dreamhost might not want to advertise that business package when they know the building their servers are in loses power so easily. *shrug*
i also thought it was nice of the few professional sysadmins to come on and suggest their geek solutions on the blog… and it sounds to me like yes, dh should move to a different building. even a more reliable one in the LA area would suffice – the owners of that building seem to not really give a shit about their clients. imho.

in the past three weeks, the amount of junk emails i’ve been getting has skyrocketed. i wonder who got into what database, or sold my address, or what? it’s bad enough that i’m thinking about changing my address.
plus, a few of my fanlistings (particularly japan) have been spammed left and right… i wish that hole in enth3 that lets people ‘join’ without entering a country would be fixed already. i realise the script is in beta testing for a new version, but.. arghhhh.
it disgusts me that we can’t even LIVE in this world without having bullshit thrown at us in the form of slogans, statistics and fake testimonials, let alone being being insidiously injected with the new form of screwing up a word in any way possible to get around any filters we can imagine. any way to make a few extra cents, and too many people out there will jump into a vat of stinking maggots to get it (sometimes literally, fear factor anyone?).
point of badly-worded rant:
greed is the absolute worst sin, in my opinion.

well, i got my bike yesterday! *glee*!
…and went on a DAMN long christening ride. i thought my friend & i would do a nice 2-mile ride around the waterfront esplanade.. but we ended up going down a trail and halfway through town on an 8-mile ride!
it’s been a few years since i really rode a bike, and i’m pretty out-of-shape…

my leeeeegs! i took some nice painkillers so it doesn’t hurt to walk at the moment, but i’m still pretty weak.. heh.

one of these days i’ll be able to handle even the hills! ^_^;

new wheels

i got a free bicycle a few days ago from an old friend. it had been sitting outside of their apartment for months, and outside at the previous owner’s place for however long before that. so it’s in need of a tune-up, but that’s cheaper than buying a whole new bike! well, the price sticker that is still on this bike says $89, so it’s not -much- cheaper, but where, nowadays, would i find a bike like this one?? it’s bright pink with shimmery splatters all over, and the best part: the cable sleeves (for brakes, etc) are silver holographic sparkly! heehee. it’s so me.
there are a few dings in the paint, the tires are a bit worn, the plastic guard behind the gear changer on the back wheel is cracked, the front reflector is bent.. oh well. the chain is dried out and slightly rusted in a couple spots and the brakes need work. a bike shop recommended to me by a coworker would charge a base price of $60 plus any needed parts.. i imagine it needs new brake pads and tires. that’s not bad. might save me $20/month on bus tickets, at least for the summer.. it’s handy living a mile from work. plus the route has no hills. ^_^;

the weather is lovely today.. supposed to get up to around 80°! *happy*

speaking of weather, i think i might install a few more useless plugins on wp this evening, including a local weather gadget. why? dunno. because it’s there. 😛
